NORTH
FORK HISTORY
The North Fork Advisory
Council was organized in 1978 to help a hospital in Elkins, WV start
an outreach clinic in Riverton. It was staffed part-time by providers
from the hospital and closed after a couple of years. The Advisory
Council worked with Grant Memorial Hospital in Petersburg, WV, to
re-open the facility. It was staffed full-time by Donald P. Mundy,
a Certified Physician's Assistant, and housed in a renovated mobile
home.
The big flood of November 1985 washed away
the building completely and the clinic eventually was able to re-open
in the Clinton Hedrick Community Building in Riverton. Mr. Mundy
spent a great deal of time working on flood rescue and recovery
efforts. The hospital obtained WV State Division of Primary Care
funding for the clinic.
In 1987 the Division of Primary Care determined that their funding
could not go through the hospital, as it was legislatively mandated
for primary care only. Pendleton Community Care, in Franklin, was
asked to take the administrative contract. It included patient billing,
accounts payable, payroll and grant writing as well as personnel
issues such as hiring and firing.
Mr. Mundy continued to get additional training throughout the late
'80s and early '90s. He finished a year at Alderson Broaddus College
for an MS certification, and later spent a school year in California
taking courses and training in emergency medicine. The distance
to a hospital from any part of the North Fork makes this kind of
training extremely valuable.
On September 29, 2000 the clinic merged with Pendleton Community
Care. The facility continues to do business as the North Fork Primary
Care Clinic.
Until 2005, Don Mundy, had been the main
medical provider at the North Fork Clinic. He is now located in
the Franklin office. Don Harris is the main provider at the North
Fork. Dr. Mary Bland works at the clinic on Tuesdays and Fridays.
